Sound Visualization rendered in Flash Action Scripting

Centre d’art Marnay Art Centre, Center for Art/science & Technology, France, 2007 Medium: wood, glass, double concave lenses, video projection, cylindrical room Dimensions: 2 meter diameter x 3.5 meter high The small town of Nogent-sur-Seine has a population of 6,000. The Nogent nuclear power plant is within close proximity to residential homes. The power plant is built right on the river of the La Seine, and the wastewater drains into the river. This installation took place inside a cylindrical tower of an old French chateau near Nogent. Nuclear cooling tower sound was recorded and combined with sounds of aerial noise, bomb explosion, rain, and nuclear reactor noise from movies. Audio layers weaving in and out of the sonic tapestry also included sound references of late night television shows and cliché sound effects from sci-fi movies and U.S. Department of Energy films of the ’50s and ’60s. The sound was then visualized into a chaotic visual representation. Projecting from the top of the tower, the light penetrated through a household window, “rained” in the installation space. At the center of the installation stood a double concave lens which induced an optical illusion of a play-dough house - much like a hologram floating in the air. Immersing in the installation, the viewers experience a tangled, chaotic visual mess. The installation speaks to the chaotic nature of and uncontrollability of nuclear reaction and the radioactive danger associated with nuclear energy generation. Set inside a cylindrical tower to resemble the space inside a reactor cooling tower, this installation examines the emotional cost of nuclear energy generation, public safety, illusion, and reality. 7.9 M^2
Jiayi Young in collaboration with Shih-Wen Young, M. Azevedo. Recorded voices by Tadashi C. Ozawa, Dmitriy Perebikovskiy
Axis Gallery, Sacramento, CA, 2011
Medium: post-consumer packaging material, flour, paint, 2-channel audio, visualized sound
This installation was created shortly after the Fukushima nuclear accident. 7.9 square meter roughly equals to 85 square feet of space. The artist created the installation based on memory of her childhood apartment in Shanghai, China. Modern day American post-consumer packaging material is used to reconstruct the furniture in the apartment. Sound and projection material was originally developed for Baby Nuna; it was reused and modified here in light of the Fukushima nuclear accident in March 2011. The viewers are invited to visit the space. Set in the presence of a home, this installation examines energy generation and consumption, threading between past and present, near and far, memory and perception, dream and reality.
