Inside Out
Group Actions organized by Jiayi Young and Don Reid
Oak Park, Sacramento, CA, 2011
American River College, Sacramento, CA, 2011-2012
The “Inside Out Project” is a creation of the artist JR, recipient of the 2011 TED Prize. On December 9, 2011, students from American River College (ARC) installed a temporary public art project in the neighborhood of Oak Park in Sacramento. The installation consists of thirteen 3’x5’ black and white portraits, wheat-pasted onto the outside of the building wall. As participants of the Inside Out Project, the students are helping artist JR accomplish his wish to change the world: to create a movement in which people stand up for what they care about. This event is independently organized as an "Inside Out Project Group Action". By offering their own photo and personal statement, the students are vested in realizing JR's wish and sharing the Inside Out Project with the community. Participants' own “Inside Out” images were sent digitally to the Inside Out Project, and were returned to them as large posters. Through these images, they seek to discover, reveal and share their untold stories, and commingle with those of other people around the world. Each photo connects to one or more of the following ideas.
Between 2011 and 2012, Young and Reid organized three group actions at American River College, Sacramento. Ninety Eight Students and staff members participated in the action.
The project wishes to thank Mr. Bill Watson (building owner), Matt Hertel (Sacramento Housing Redevelopment Agency) and Shelly Willis (Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission, Art in Public Places) for their support of the project.
